The rise of digital nomads and what exactly are they?
And now there's today where most everyone lives "in the cloud" and nearly everything you need to work remotely is available in some unlimited plan. All your contacts, emails, documents, company software and face to face meetings can be accessed from your pocket. And who needs the news on TV when Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and many other social media sites send you push notifications of the latest happenings around the world within seconds of it actually happening or while it's happening. Plus it's kind of like finding Bigfoot if you meet someone that isn't on Facebook.
A gigantic portion of millennials are always connected and it's spreading throughout generations past and future. The ability to "work remote" has become so simple that unfortunately a lot of people call in sick to work from home instead of calling in sick and taking the day to rest. Hence why there are so many commercials calling the attention to booking travel and not letting your paid vacation days go to waste. Here's my favorite from MasterCard
The digital nomads of the world have harnessed the power of being able to be connected at any time, any day, and use their talents to work from anywhere.
Digital nomads are location-less
What this means is their home is where they are currently hanging their hat. They work while they travel. Think about it, no mortgage, no utility bills, no homeowners or renters insurance, no maintenance costs. They work wherever their happen to be often choosing different forms of lodging in cities and countries that have good connectivity. They may do short term renting of apartments or houses but many take advantage of options like Couchsurfing, Airbnb, VRBO, or do housesitting.
Digital nomads are often called tech-based professionals
They work for themselves in one way or another. Freelancers with personal businesses that are solely done online such as graphic design, web design, writers, bloggers, and virtual assistants just to name a few. Some of them even just bounce around finding random jobs in the cities they happen to be in at the time trying new things like teaching English in foreign countries or selling flip-flops in Key West (ok i haven't found anyone doing that yet but it's on MY wish list)
Digital nomads don't do 9-5
They must be very disciplined since their choice to work freelance gives them the option to work when they want, where they want and have full control of their own schedules. They don't have a commute and don't have to deal with office politics. They work from the beach, the patio, the coffee shop and even many co-working locations that are popping up in cities around the world.
Digital nomads value experiences over "stuff"
Visiting their websites, one of the first things you will read was their choice to sell most or all of their possessions to focus on valued experiences over collections of things. Some of the nomads I have referenced below have only what fits in a van or even a backpack. They have real wanderlust and spend their time exploring the world and often share their experiences through their websites, ebooks and blogs.
Digital nomads have made the choice to not be normal
They don't sit motionless in an office day in and day out, waiting to accumulate enough vacation days to take a short break from reality to travel. Travel is their reality. This is something that many people dream of doing but are simply too scared to do it. Leave the normal steady paycheck to follow their passions and make a living doing it. There have even been a number of articles published about how digital nomads are more productive than the average office worker.
We are working our way towards this lifestyle and while it's exciting, it's also scary. But I learn a lot from reading blogs of other people who have been living as digital nomads. They are location independent and each have their own focus and style of working and traveling.
