When we made the decision to work towards being digital nomads, we knew that would mean not having pets. We would give every ounce of our love to our kids in their final years and then not adopt any more. Today I am watching the clock as this evening we will lose one more.
Trying to get anything done today is going to be impossible. I'm not going to delve deeply into the details of what happened with him but at 14.5 years old, my sweet cat Neo developed cancer in his mouth and it has slowly taken him from me. Tonight we say goodbye.
I got Maverick and Neo when they were just 8 weeks old and they have been so much to me over the years. Getting me through a marriage, then a long separation, divorce and married again. Maverick was always my cuddle bug and was very connected to me.
Neo never was much of a lap cat or cuddle bug until I lost Maverick. Then he became my everything. I was so worried how he would be without his brother but it's like he knew it was his time to step up and be my furry love. He took over to comfort me, sit by me while I work, sleep in my lap while watching TV.
On top of that, we lost our little girl, Truffle, last week to cancer as well. She was almost 15. She was our monkey and always a crazy bundle of energy. Not necessarily a cuddly dog but for being little, she had a big personality.
My head and my heart are numb today but I needed to get this down in a post since it's very significant in our lives. We knew this would be a hard time in our lives and we still have two dogs with us but at ages 13 and 15, it's hard to know how long we have left with them.
When our house has lost the last of our furry kids, we know, at least for now, the right decision is to not adopt any new pets. We want to be free to travel where our heart takes us and my hopes is that we can acquire a number of housesitting jobs along the way that will allow us to get our necessary doses of furry love.
