Mark has been taking classes for photography and is starting to grow his portfolio. His passion subjects are currently wildlife, natures and sports. Recently, he got a great opportunity to work alongside our friend Nick who is also a professional photographer in Hammond, Illinois, taking photos of the athletes participating in Leon's Triathlon.
It is very easy to get caught up in all the tourist areas and expensive activities that Key West has to offer. I know we sure did the first time we visited here a few years ago. I mean, who doesn't want to escape winter and go snorkeling, diving, jet-skiing, kayaking or one of many other warm-water based excursions? All things that help you to unwind and forget about the bitter cold climate you are likely escaping.
But before you start booking your activities for your visit to Key West, here are our travel tips and destination recommendations that can save you some money and help you explore the best of Key West:
Yesterday morning we were planning on sleeping in and enjoying a lazy Sunday. Maybe get some cleaning done, watch a movie, laundry, etc. But around 7:00am we both sprung out of bed after hearing a Great Horned Owl hooting somewhere near our house. We heard them twice and we were convinced he was in one of our trees in our backyard. After searching every tree around our house in the chilly morning air, we realized he must have taken off. So there we sat, wide awake much earlier than anticipated with owls on the brain!
Mark has been wanting to drive over into Wisconsin for the past few weeks now to find a Northern Hawk Owl that has been seen numerous times in one particular spot. So today became the day! On top of just going to get a picture of the owl, Mark was trying out the new backpack that he bought specifically for traveling with all of our photography gear and laptops.
After a few reports on the Minnesota Birding Facebook group, we couldn't help but re-route our already hectic afternoon/evening to Le Sueur, Minnesota to check out this extremely rare find. A huge thank you to the very welcoming homeowners that allowed all the birders onto their land to spend time with a feisty little Rufous Hummingbird.
