For our anniversary dinner, we went to Siena Tavern in Downtown Chicago. We chose this place because of its reputation for great upscale Italian food and also because the owner is Fabio Viviani, who was a contestant on Top Chef and one of our favorites from the show.
I actually had to travel here for a meeting for my work with USA Triathlon but since it was also our anniversary on Friday, we decided to make a mini trip out of it. For the first time we decided to travel by train on Amtrak and arrived in town just before 6pm on Friday. The train station and traffic was crazy since it was rush hour so we decided to just walk the 1.7mi to our hotel. Not knowing the city very well, I wasn’t sure if we would be going through any “not so good” areas but never did we feel uncomfortable and there were business travelers and tourists everywhere. Downtown Chicago is very walkable. Granted it might have been because of the colder weather in December (low 30’s F) but not much in terms of bicycle traffic. They do have a bike rental system like Nice Ride in Minneapolis if that’s your preferred mode of travel. It’s called Divvy. Otherwise there are LOTS of taxis and many people on foot. And since we were in the holiday season, many of the buildings were lit up in red and green.
I had to travel to Chicago with my work at USA Triathlon so we decided to have some fun with the short weekend and try a new mode of travel and booked tickets on Amtrak's Empire Builder. I believe it has always had stops in Minneapolis/St. Paul but it recently moved its station over to the newly renovated Union Depot in St. Paul. It's a beautiful station with not a large amount of commuter trains so it wasn't at all crowded and fairly easy to navigate.
