On our way from Miami to Key West we did a brief trip into the Everglades to check out the Anhinga Trail. This trail is a self-guided trail through a marsh area that is home to many birds and alligators, especially in the winter.
I guess this is a hard post to write as I have to start it out by covering a somber situation. Mark's father, Harold, passed away somewhat unexpectedly this past weekend from Angiosarcoma. It's a pretty rare form of cancer and until just near the end, we didn't really know what he was suffering from. He had not been previously diagnosed with cancer. He admitted himself to the hospital 3 weeks ago on August 29th and things quickly went downhill from there. He lived near Phoenix, Arizona and Mark and his brother Michael tag-teamed to be with him over the past few weeks and now we, along with a number of family members, are down here in Sun City West, AZ to take care of closing out his estate and the memorial service was today. After a few reports on the Minnesota Birding Facebook group, we couldn't help but re-route our already hectic afternoon/evening to Le Sueur, Minnesota to check out this extremely rare find. A huge thank you to the very welcoming homeowners that allowed all the birders onto their land to spend time with a feisty little Rufous Hummingbird.
