While traveling back from our Off-Road Adventure Day where we got to "play" with our Jeep, we decided to take some time and explore a few key spots along the St. Croix River Valley as part of our Journey Minnesota project. After stopping at the Franconia Sculpture Park, and Brown's Creek State Trail, we ended the day with dinner at one of our favorite foodie spots, Smalley's Caribbean Barbecue and Pirate Bar
A must-stop if you enjoy unique dining experiences! Smalley's is along the main drag of shopping and dining in the beautiful downtown area of Stillwater, MN. It's known for it's bar menus that includes an extensive list of rums (4 pages worth including a $500, 50 year old Appleton rum from Jamaica) and unique pirate themed decor that even includes skeletons on the ceiling.
A true test of your fire-loving taste buds if you so choose, Smalley's has a lot of options to turn up the heat on your dishes. Plus Smalley's was visited by one of our favorite Food Network Stars, Guy Fieri, as part of his Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show.
Now while it's not necessarily the best tasting beer, it was hard for Mark not to order the Red Stripe Jamaican beer. I mean we are at a Caribbean Pirate Bar! We started with one of our favorites, the basket of tortilla and plantain chips. The queso and salsa are spicy so I recommend also adding the side of guacamole if you are like me and don't tolerate much beyond "mild."
We shared the pulled smoked chicken sandwich with Pepper Slab Bacon, Tomato, Grilled Scallion Aioli and Cheddar. Yum!! On each table is also a set of 4 hot sauces that range from a no heat barbecue to an "omg" hot sauce so you can dial up the heat even further if you so choose.
Read closely on the menu and you can request a basket of grilled jalapeno peppers with lime. Mark handles spicy heat pretty well but even these had him sniffling! He enjoyed them as an add on to his half of the pulled chicken sandwich. Would you dare?? :)
